Singapore Airlines Updates Route Network

Singapore Airlines is making adjustments to its network during the Northern Winter schedule to better match capacity with demand.

These changes, listed below, will take place progressively throughout the five-month-long Northern Winter schedule, which takes effect from 26 October 2008.

Flights to Penang and Ho Chi Minh will be gradually reduced during the Northern Winter period. As a result, Singapore Airlines will operate 18 weekly flights to Penang and 17 weekly flights to Ho Chi Minh.

Service to and from Seoul will be reduced progressively from the start of the winter season with a reduction in frequency of SQ 608 (Singapore-Seoul) and SQ 609 (Seoul-Singapore). The flights will be suspended from service completely from 2 February to 28 March 2009, when the winter season ends. Despite this reduction, Singapore Airlines will continue to operate 17 weekly services to and from the Korean capital during winter.

Osaka will be served once a day from 2 November 2008 by SQ 618 (Singapore-Osaka) and SQ617 (Osaka-Singapore). Flights SQ 622 (Singapore-Osaka) and SQ 621 (Osaka-Singapore) will be suspended.

Frequencies to Bangalore and Chennai will also be reduced during the Northern Winter schedule. The affected flights are SQ 500 and SQ 501, on the Singapore-Bangalore route, and SQ 526, and SQ527, between Singapore and Chennai. Both cities in India will continue to be served daily.

Service to Amritsar will be withdrawn from 4 February 2009. Customers booked on flights to and from Amritsar will be re-accommodated on Singapore Airlines flight to and from Delhi.

From February 2009, Singapore Airlines will link its Cape Town flights to Johannesburg, although frequency will not change. The Cape Town extension will operate on three flights weekly, while the daily service to Johannesburg is maintained.

These changes come as Singapore Airlines increases services to the Middle East.

Last week (26 October), the frequency of Singapore Airlines flights to Istanbul, via Dubai, was boosted from four to six flights per week.

The Airline will also commence operations to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 14 December 2008. The four-times weekly service will operate via Dubai every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Singapore Airlines will be operating 20 times a week to Dubai with the start of operations to Riyadh.

In the current operating environment, Singapore Airlines remains committed to providing customers the highest standard of service, while ensuring capacity is allocated carefully to match demand. Where demand falls, capacity adjustments will be made quickly.

Some other changes will be made on an ad-hoc basis where demand requires. Where changes are made, customers will be informed at the earliest opportunity, and rebooked onto alternative flights.

Singapore Airlines To Offer Preferred Seat Selection

Singapore Airlines customers making Economy Class bookings on singaporeair.com now have the additional choice of guaranteeing themselves a Preferred Seat, with the introduction of Preferred Seat Selection. Currently, Preferred Seats available for allocation are located in exit rows.

Customers will be offered an option to purchase a specific Preferred Seat, when they make their seat selection for applicable Economy Class bookings – including KrisFlyer redemption bookings – on singaporeair.com.

Customers can also purchase a Preferred Seat anytime before check-in (which begins 48 hours before flight departure), simply by retrieving their bookings on singaporeair.com.

Preferred Seats offer customers more legroom, and are now available for advance and guaranteed customer selection, for a fee of USD 50 per sector, for all Singapore Airlines flights, except short-haul routes within Southeast Asia, and flights served by Boeing B777-200ER aircraft (this aircraft does not have seats located in exit rows). Preferred Seat Selection is subject to official approval in some markets, and some local variations may apply where regulatory approvals dictate.

Other categories of Preferred Seats, that similarly offer customers more legroom, may also be made available for selection in future.

Previously, Preferred Seats were only available on a request basis, without confirmation. The new option now offers a guarantee of assignment, subject to terms and conditions, on a first come, first serve basis.

For seats located in exit rows, Singapore Airlines requires, as part of our commitment to the safety of all our customers, that those who select and occupy these seats must meet mandatory safety conditions. These prerequisites, which strictly comply with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore's flight safety guidelines, require that these customers must:

Be at least 21 years of age at the commencement of the journey.
Be fully able-bodied, and capable of opening the exit doors and moving quickly, or reaching and passing through the adjacent emergency exit.
Be able to understand and follow the safety instructions in English.
Be in good health at the time of check-in, boarding, and during the flight.
Not be pregnant, or carrying infants, or using an infant seat belt.
Not be under the influence of any intoxicating substance at check-in, boarding, and during the flight, as determined by ground and cabin crew.
Not require an extension seat belt because of large body size.

Singapore Airlines Reduces Fuel Surcharges

Singapore Airlines will lower its fuel surcharges for travellers in Business and Economy Class, across all routes, for tickets issued on or after Friday 7 November 2008.

The reduction is the second time since September 2008 that Singapore Airlines has reduced fuel surcharges, in line with the recent sustained fall in the price of jet fuel.

Besides the length of the journey, the surcharge levels will hereafter also take into account the class of travel. This is to fairly impute fuel related cost since the space occupied and weight utilised in each class is different.

The new surcharges that will apply from Friday 7 November are as follows:

Despite the recent easing of jet fuel prices, collections from fuel surcharges only partially offset the increased expenditure on jet fuel.

Singapore Airlines will keep jet fuel prices under constant review, as they remain volatile. Any changes in the application of surcharges will be based on trend price movements in the price of jet fuel.

Boeing factories set to resume work after strike

Workers are expected to return Sunday night to the commercial airplane factories that have been closed since the Sept. 6 walkout.

SEATTLE (AP) -- Factories at Boeing are due to start humming again Sunday after Machinists union members voted to end a costly eight-week strike that clipped profits and stalled deliveries by the world's number two commercial airplane maker.

Workers are expected to return Sunday night to Boeing's commercial airplane factories, which have been closed since the Sept. 6 walkout. The strike cost an estimated $100 million a day in deferred revenue and production delays on the company's highly anticipated next-generation passenger jet.

Machinists union members ended their walkout on Saturday by ratifying a new contract with Boeing (BA,Fortune 500). Members of the union, which represents about 27,000 workers at plants in Washington state, Oregon and Kansas, voted about 74 percent in favor of the proposal five days after the two sides tentatively agreed to the deal and union leaders recommended its approval.

"This contract gives the workers at Boeing an opportunity to share in the extraordinary success this company has achieved over the past several years," Mark Blondin, the union's aerospace coordinator and chief negotiator, said in a union news release.

"It also recognizes the need to act with foresight to protect the next generation of aerospace jobs. These members helped make Boeing the company it is today, and they have every right to be a part of its future," he said.

$349 billion backlog
The union has said the contract protects more than 5,000 factory jobs, prevents the outsourcing of certain positions and preserves health care benefits. It also promises pay increases over four years rather than three, as outlined in earlier offers.

The union members, including electricians, painters, mechanics and other production workers, have lost an average of about $7,000 in base pay since the strike began. They had rejected earlier proposals by the company, headquartered in Chicago.

It was the union's fourth strike against Boeing in two decades and its longest since 1995. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers staged strikes against Boeing for 24 days in 2005, 69 days in 1995 and 48 days in 1989.

"We're looking forward to having our team back together to resume the work of building airplanes for our customers," Scott Carson, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and chief executive, said in a statement. "This new contract addresses the union's job security issues while enabling Boeing to retain the flexibility needed to run the business ... and allows us to remain competitive."

The walkout came amid surging demand for Boeing's commercial jetliners, which include 737s, 747s, 767s and 777s.

Chicago-based Boeing, which ranks as the world's second-largest commercial airplane maker after Europe's Airbus, has said its order backlog has swollen to a record $349 billion in value.

The strike also further postponed the delivery of Boeing's long-awaited 787 jetliner, which has already been delayed three times, and other commercial planes.

It remains unclear how long it would take Boeing's commercial aircraft business to return to pre-strike production levels, but the company's chief financial officer, James Bell, has said Boeing hopes it would take less than two months.

The walkout started as the global economy began sinking into turmoil. Boeing executives have said only 10 percent of the company's orders come from domestic carriers, while the rest are placed by customers in other parts of the world, particularly Asia.

As the Machinists strike wore on, Boeing began talks with another union in hopes of avoiding a second strike by 21,000 scientists, engineers, manual writers, technicians and other hourly workers.

Boeing officials and representatives of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, which struck for 40 days in 2000, moved into the final phase of contract talks Wednesday. The union's two current contracts expire Dec. 1.

Negotiators at a hotel outside Seattle say they hope to present a proposal to that union's membership by mid-November.

		The A380 has set new standards for passenger comfort during its initial year of revenue airline service, providing reliable long-range flights to destinations in Singapore, Australia, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, England and the United States. On today's first anniversary of the A380's entry in service, a total of nine A380s are now in the fleets of Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qantas. Singapore Airlines introduced A380 operations on 25 October 2007, and currently has a total of six aircraft. This was followed by Emirates of the United Arab Emirates, which started flights in August 2008 and has two A380s in its inventory. Qantas inaugurated service earlier this month with the Australian-based carrier's first-delivered A380. All three airlines have chosen cabin layouts that benefit from the A380's spacious two main decks and its new technology, and which allow operators to offer high levels of service for all passengers. Singapore Airlines' A380 layout has a total of 471 seats in three classes of service. The Singapore Airlines Suites - offered exclusively on the A380 - provide a private space with its largest seat ever: an armchair with adjustable headrest and armrests. Included in the suite is a stand-alone bed, topped off with a turn-down service, fine linen and full-sized pillows. In Singapore Airlines' New Business Class, the A380 seats are the widest in their category, with each leather seat unfolding to the largest full-flat bed of its type. Singapore Airlines' New Economy Class has roomier seats and the widest choice of on-demand entertainment options, presented on a 10.6-inch-wide LCD screen. The Emirates A380 configuration is with a 14-seat First Class cabin, 76 seats in Business Class and a 399-seat Economy Class. This arrangement includes the First Class Shower Spa: two fully-equipped bathrooms in its First Class cabins with shower facilities. The A380 also has an Emirates Onboard Lounge in the Business Class cabin for use by both First and Business Class passengers, which is designed to make travellers feel like they are in their own executive club. Another First Class social area and bar is located at the front of the upper deck. In Emirates' A380 Economy Class cabin, straight walls give the impression of increased spaciousness, and this feature - combined with an advanced mood lighting system and the Airbus 21st century jetliner's noticeably quieter cabin - works to combat the effects of jetlag. Qantas' A380 is configured with 450 seats in four cabins: 14 in First Class, 72 in Business Class, 32 in Premium Economy and 332 in Economy Class. The 14 single private suites in First Class feature a 17-inch wide-screen LCD video monitor, a unique touch-screen control unit, and a seat that swivels into a comfortable armchair and a fully flat, extra long and wide bed. The next generation of Qantas' award-winning Business Class Skybed sleeper seat offers an extra-long, fully lie-flat bed with ergonomically-enhanced cushioning, a larger in-arm entertainment screen, additional storage options and more privacy. AirAsia X, the long haul low cost unit of the Malaysia-based AirAsia Group, has taken delivery of its first new A330-300. The aircraft was handed over at a special ceremony at Airbus headquarters in Toulouse today in the presence of the Malaysian Minister of Transport, Dato' Ong Tee Keat. The new aircraft is the first of 25 A330-300s ordered by AirAsia X for the development of its long haul operation, linking Kuala Lumpur with destinations in Australia, North Asia, the Middle East and Europe, complementing the existing AirAsia network. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, the carrier's new A330 offers accommodation for 383 passengers in a two-class layout, with 355 seats in Economy and 28 in the airline's new XL premium class. "The A330 is the perfect aircraft to enable the AirAsia Group to extend its winning low cost model to the long haul market", said Azran Osman Rani, Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia X. "With its incredibly low fuel burn, the clean and green A330 will enable us to improve cost efficiency and grow the overall air travel market by tapping a new segment of passengers through the offering of the best possible fares". Keeping Passengers and Employees Safe at All Times

At American Airlines, no commitment is more important – or pursued more pervasively or with greater energy, day after day – than its commitment to the safety of customers and employees. Indeed, safety is at the very core of the airline, and American has developed an array of initiatives to help it meet its safety imperative, both in the air and on the ground. No task is more important – or receives greater attention – than this one.

In any number of ways, the safety commitment is focused on the physical well being of customers and employees. But there are other important dimensions to safety that also focus on customer service, and on a variety of transportation initiatives aimed at ensuring that every experience with American Airlines is both safe and enjoyable. Day in and day out, in every aspect of its operations, American and its people do all they can to create an environment that allows customers to fly with us – and employees to serve with us – in complete confidence, no matter where they may be in the global network.

Buckle Up for Safety

Turbulence is the leading cause of injury to customers and flight attendants in nonfatal accidents.
Each year, approximately 60 airline customers are injured during turbulence while not wearing their seat belts.
Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) require customers to be seated with their seat belts properly fastened during takeoff, landing and any time the "fasten seat belt" sign is lighted during flight. The regulations apply to several circumstances:
When the aircraft leaves the gate and until it climbs after takeoff.
Whenever the "fasten seat belt" sign is lighted.
During landing, and until the aircraft reaches the gate and comes to a complete stop.
During severe weather conditions, such as storms or strong headwinds.

For all of these reasons, American urges all customers to keep their seat belts fastened across their lap while seated. During turbulence, customers should always buckle up and be aware that flight attendants may suspend cabin service to protect themselves from injury. The safety of every person, including the flight crew, is our number one priority.

Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) and Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS)

As part of its safety commitment, American equips its cockpits with the very latest technology. Two systems – the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) and the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) – assist pilots in avoiding terrain and also provide them with additional terrain awareness information.

The GPWS provides visual and aural warnings for:

Descending too quickly
Flying too quickly toward terrain
Losing altitude after takeoff or go-around
Clearing terrain in flight situations other than landing
Descending on a path below the prescribed landing path (glide slope)

The EGPWS incorporates some major enhancements to the GPWS system, including:

The addition of a worldwide runway database, which provides specific terrain alerts for runways that are more than 3,500 feet long.
The capability to display terrain data from a worldwide terrain database.
The capability to issue alerts if the system predicts a conflict between the airplane's flight path and terrain in the area.
Automated landing callouts to keep flight crews aware of their height above ground as they approach the runway.

Following FAA approval in 1996, American was the first airline in the world to begin installing the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System on its entire fleet.

Delays

We expect, as you do, that American Airlines and American Eagle will operate flights on time. On occasion, the weather or other challenges can make it difficult, if not impossible, to stay on schedule. When a delay or cancellation does occur, the goal of American and American Eagle is to get our customers to their destinations as safely and as quickly as possible.

Medical Assistance

In 1997, American Airlines became the first U.S. carrier to begin equipping its aircraft with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and later was among the very first U.S. airlines to equip its entire fleet – about 700 aircraft – with the units. Over the years, the devices have helped American and its flight crews save many passenger lives.

American also provides state-of-the-art enhanced medical kits as standard equipment on its airplanes, and has physicians "on call" 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for in-flight medical emergencies and to offer assistance with passenger boarding questions. These physicians provide real-time assessments of in-flight medical problems, including treatment and recommendations when a medical problem is serious enough to divert the flight.

Cabin Air Quality

There are three issues that affect air quality in the cabin:

Ratio of outside air to recirculated air
Ratio at which outside air is replaced
Oxygen content

American Airlines controls the air in its passenger cabins to keep customers as comfortable as possible, and focuses on air purity through the filtration of recirculated air.

The air in passenger cabins always contains more oxygen than is needed. Oxygen makes up 20 percent of fresh air, and the normal oxygen requirement for sedentary activities, such as sitting on a plane, requires only 2.4 percent of the amount American provides – 10 cubic feet per minute (cfm).

The cabin air that passengers breathe is a mixture of fresh air drawn from outside the aircraft and air that has been recirculated within the airplane. Outside air is changed at the rate of 10-15 times per hour. This rate exceeds the rates found in trains, hospitals and office buildings.

Deicing

American Airlines and American Eagle spend approximately $14 million a year to "clean" the wings and control surfaces of their aircraft for safe flight in cold weather.
The deicing process involves spraying various fluids on the control surfaces of an airplane's wings and tail, the wings themselves and, in some circumstances, the fuselage.
FAA regulations require the deicing process to be completed no more than five minutes before takeoff. The fluids used for the process do not pose significant health risks to American's employees or passengers.
American's ground services employees receive extensive training to ensure that all phases of deicing are done properly and effectively.

Transporting Hazardous Goods

To ensure passenger safety for all flights, American Airlines has approved detailed guidelines and restrictions for the transport of certain materials.

Electronic devices approved for transport include:

Heart regulators, hearing aids and medical devices are accepted during all phases of flight.
Portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) are accepted for use in flight, but not for taxi, takeoff or landing. This is provided that the customer brings enough spare batteries to last the duration of the flight, plus extras for potential delays or diversions. The batteries must be packed and secured to prevent the terminals from arcing. There is an FAA approved list of POCs, and the SAC (Special Assistance Coordinator) desk knows which ones are accepted. Any items outside this FAA list will not be accepted.
Cell phones may be used while parked at the gate. They must be turned off during taxi out, takeoff and in flight, but their use is permitted after landing, once the aircraft has exited the runway and is taxiing to the terminal.
Portable electronic devices such as personal computers, electronic games and toys, audio/video players, and portable typewriters may be carried onboard and used after takeoff. Any spare batteries customers might bring for their laptops, cameras, cell phones, ipods, games, POCs, etc., must be carried on-board rather than in their checked baggage. These batteries should be in their original sealed and unused packaging from the manufacturer whenever possible. When not possible, the batteries should have electrical tape over the electrodes to prevent arcing. Defective batteries that have been recalled by the manufacturer can not be brought on board. Power ports on board the aircraft cannot be used to recharge batteries. The power ports should be used only to keep the batteries from discharging while the laptop or other items are in use.
Law enforcement officials may carry weapons in the passenger cabin with proper authorization.
Unloaded firearms, packed in a crushproof container or hard-sided, locked suitcase, are allowed in checked baggage only, and must be accompanied by a declaration form. A passenger is allowed to check a maximum of 11 pounds of ammunition, properly packed in the same container as the firearm.
Recreational paint guns, without the CO2 cartridge, are acceptable as checked baggage. It is recommended that passengers alert the airport ticket counter agents if they are transporting a paint gun.

Restricted Articles

Stun guns, knives and military swords must be in checked baggage and do not require a declaration.
Dry ice in quantities not exceeding 5.5 pounds per person may be transported in carry-on baggage when used to pack perishables not subject to U.S. Hazardous Materials Regulations. The package must permit the release of carbon dioxide gas. Dry ice may be transported in checked baggage with American's approval when each package is marked "Dry Ice" or "Carbon Dioxide, Solid" and marked with the net mass of dry ice, or an indication that the net weight is 5.5 pounds or less.
Laser pointers should be included in checked baggage.
Tool boxes may be transported as checked baggage only, but may not contain hazardous goods such as aerosols.
Medical-assistance devices with magnetic properties require clearance by special assistance coordinators.
Butane hair curlers, without refills, are acceptable.
Carbon dioxide cylinders, with two cylinders fitted in a life jacket plus two spares, are acceptable. Please note: Although items such as these are deemed acceptable by the FAA, the Transporation Security Administration (TSA) may confiscate them. If customers have another means of transporting these items, or can obtain them at their destination, we recommend that they do so.
All items listed as Prohibited Articles on aircraft: Aerosols (spray cans), fuels, paints, solvents, starch, alcohols, nail polish, lighter refills, camping gas, fireworks, flares, black powder, bleaches, drain cleaners, lead-acid batteries, bottles of acid, strike-anywhere matches, gas-powered tools, self-heating meals, model-rocket motors, hydrogen peroxide 40 percent or greater, mace, and pepper spray.

Smoking

As a result of Federal legislation effective July 1, 1997, all American Airlines and American Eagle flights are nonsmoking. In addition, smoking is not permitted on any of the flights operated by American's codeshare partners, including those who belong to the global oneworld Alliance. However, SNCF French Rail in Europe still allows smoking, and American codeshares on many of SNCF's rail routes to and from Paris.

Overview

At the company's annual meeting in May 1982, stockholders approved a plan of reorganization under which a new holding company, AMR Corporation, was formed and became the parent company of American Airlines. The reorganization took effect on Oct. 1, 1982. The formation of AMR had no effect on day-to-day operations of American, but it did – and still does – provide the company with access to sources of financing that otherwise might not be available. The holding company structure also allows the company to take advantage of appropriate new opportunities. The name "AMR" was taken from the airline's three-letter New York Stock Exchange trading symbol. It simply stands for "American."

Today, AMR is the parent company of both American Airlines, Inc. and American Eagle Airlines, Inc., and has a number of businesses and key facilities within its corporate structure. The company is also a founding member of the global oneworld Alliance. All aspects of the airline's worldwide activities are oveseen from AMR's Corporate Headquarters campus in Fort Worth, Texas. Corporate Headquarters Campus
Located in two modern office buildings along Amon Carter Boulevard in Fort Worth's CentrePort commercial park, AMR's headquarters occupies a total of about 1.4 million square feet and is home to more than 4,300 employees. The Headquarters was relocated to Fort Worth from New York City in July and August of 1979. Just a few minutes south of DFW International Airport, site of American's largest connecting hub, the Headquarters is at the heart of the airline's global route network, an important advantage in managing what is truly a worldwide enterprise.

American Airlines Cargo, a division of American Airlines, Inc., provides over 100 million pounds of weekly cargo lift capacity to major cities in the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia. Overall, AA Cargo transports more cargo than any airline that doesn't operate freighter aircraft. American provides one of the largest cargo networks in the world, with cargo terminals and interline connections available across the globe. American Eagle
In 1984, American Airlines established American Eagle as its regional airline affiliate. The American Eagle network is now the largest regional airline system in the world, connecting passengers to and from American flights at its hubs and other key cities. It operates more than 300 aircraft with more than 1,700 flights a day and serves more than 150 cities throughout the Unites States, Canada, The Bahamas and the Caribbean. Its seven hubs are Boston, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Los Angeles, New York LaGuardia/JFK and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Together, American, American Eagle and the AmericanConnection airlines serve 250 cities in over 40 countries with about 4,000 daily flights. The combined network fleet numbers more than 1,000 aircraft. In 2007, American Eagle alone carried about 21 million passengers, connecting about 10.2 million passengers to and from American flights. American Eagle has approximately 13,000 employees. In 2007, AMR announced plans to divest American Eagle in 2008, but those plans have been deferred because of industry and economic conditions.

The American Airlines Training and Conference Center is located in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area, just minutes south of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. When the Center first opened in 1957 as the American Airlines Stewardess College, it was one of the first facilities in the airline industry for the centralized training of airline cabin attendants. Through the years, the Center's role as evolved dramatically. American Airlines Flight Academy
Opened in 1971 just south of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the American Airlines Flight Academy is an institution dedicated to safety in air travel and is the center for all pilot training activities at American and American Eagle. Recognized by the aerospace industry as one of the finest flight training facilities in the world, the Flight Academy operates 365 days a year and on any give month, has more than 1,000 AA pilots visit for training. The Flight Academy houses a total of 27 highly advanced cockpit simulators for training on each aircraft type flown by American and American Eagle, all the way up to Boeing 777. Each year, American's and American Eagle's pilots "fly" millions of very challenging training miles. Without ever leaving the ground, pilots are tested and challenged with literally thousands of emergency scenarios and malfunctions to ensure safety and prepare them for any eventuality. The System Operations Control Center
Located in a three-story building near DFW Airport, the System Operations Control Center is the nerve center of the worldwide American Airlines route network, coordinating the day-to-day, minute-by-minute operation of the airline. Years ago, many of SOC's activities were performed at key regional locations like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Now, all of these critical operational oversight functions are consolidated in one major, cutting-edge operating center – SOC. Today, SOC must manage a global, complex, and fast-moving network of people, aircraft, equipment and facilities, with safety and customer service top priorities.

Overall, SOC fulfills two major needs for American: 1) The need to coordinate and monitor daily and minute-by-minute operating decisions on a centralized, system-wide basis for what is now a global network, and 2) The need to meet Federal Aviation Regulations for operational control of the route system and the decisions that affect those operations. In doing this, SOC:

SOC is managed by a total of four Center Managers and eight Sector Managers who, working in shifts around the clock:

Consider the entire operation, anticipate events, and resolve competing interests.
Manage any abnormal or emergency situation that affects any part of the airline, its passengers, it employees or its facilities.

Key functional areas of SOC include:

Flight Dispatch – 176 FAA certified flight dispatchers are assigned to more than 30 Dispatch Desks, working 27 geographical areas. They are co-responsible with AA's Captains for the safety of flight operations.
Weight and Balance – A total of 70 highly trained Weight and Balance people establish a working Load Plan to field locations for all AA departures systemwide
Flight Planning Support – A team of 14 highly trained people ensures the accuracy of the flight plan route database, covering more than 10,000 routes worldwide.
Corporate Complaint Resolution – A team of eight senior analysts works to ensure maximum accessibility for travelers with disabilities or medical conditions.
Air Traffic Systems – Two managers interface with 22 Regional Air Route Traffic Control Centers to help manage air traffic issues.
Operations Coordinators – This team of experts helps manage unplanned operational events such as those presented by hurricanes, winter snow and ice storms and summer severe weather conditions.
Command Center -- In the heart of SOC, the Command Center becomes the system-wide focal point for managing emergencies and serious service disruptions.

American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum
Named in honor of aviation pioneer and former American Airlines Chairman C.R. Smith, the C.R. Smith Museum opened on July 3, 1993, in a modern new facility next to the American Airlines Flight Academy, just south of DFW Airport. The Museum preserves and interprets the history of American Airlines, American Eagle and the air transportation industry. Through its activities, the Museum serves active and retired employees, the educational community and interested members of the general public. Because of its commitment to education, the Museum's exhibits stress interactive learning through hands-on displays. The Museum collects artifacts and archival materials that are suitable to its educational and exhibit programs. A main feature is the Flagship Knoxville, a fully restored 1930s-era American Airlines DC-3 housed in a modern, glass-enclosed "hangar." With more than 35,000 square feet of total exhibit space, the Museum unveiled a fresh new look in 2008. The makeover includes an upgrade of the Museum's 114-seat theater, a new historical walkway from the theater to the main exhibits, a renovated and updated History Circle, a redesigned Inner Circle with a theater space for a new "American Journey" video, a more efficient lighting system, and a large external mural visible to both motorists and in the air to some passengers landing at DFW Airport. The C.R. Smith Museum is also a unique and engaging environment in which the public can hold corporate and private functions. The Museum hosts more than 50,000 visitors per year.

Alliance ( Fort Worth) Maintenance Base
American's Maintenance Base at Alliance Airport in Fort Worth, Texas, about 22 miles northwest of DFW Airport, opened in January 1992. It is the fleet maintenance base for AA's B767 and B777 aircraft and for the Rolls Royce engines American flies. The base's work includes heavy overhaul maintenance on the B767 and B777 fleets, as well as modification work on those fleets and maintenance work for other airlines. The Alliance Base is also home to TAESL (Texas Aero Engine Services, Ltd.), a joint venture with Rolls Royce for the repair and overhaul of certain Rolls Royce engines. American has nearly 2,250 employees at Alliance, about 1,000 of whom are licensed aircraft and jet engine mechanics. The Base occupies about 200 acres at Alliance Airport. Its main hangar facility, large enough to accommodate six wide-body jets, covers 781,000 square feet.

Tulsa ( Oklahoma) Maintenance Base
Opened in June 1946, American's Maintenance & Engineering Center at Tulsa ( Okla.) International Airport is one of the largest and most sophisticated aviation maintenance facilities in the world. It is the headquarters for all Maintenance and Engineering activities at American Airlines worldwide, and is the maintenance base for the airline's fleet of MD-80, B757, A300 and B737 aircraft – a combined total of nearly 580 airplanes. The Tulsa Base also performs all overhaul work on American's Pratt and Whitney JT-8, and General Electric CF6-80 and CFM56 jet engines. Cutting-edge Base features include jet aircraft wheel and brake overhaul facilities and a composite repair center. With nearly 6,800 employees, more than 5,800 of whom are licensed aircraft and jet engine mechanics, American's Tulsa Base is one of the largest private employers in Oklahoma. The Base occupies about 260 acres and 3.3 million square feet of maintenance "plant" at the Tulsa Airport. Each year, the base performs major overhaul work on about 80% of American's fleet. It also does aircraft maintenance for other carriers on a contract basis.

Kansas City ( Missouri) Maintenance Base
Originally part of TWA, American acquired its Maintenance Base at Kansas City ( Mo.) International Airport in 2001 as part of a package for the acquisition of certain TWA assets. The Kansas City Base is now home for all major maintenance work on American's fleet of B76-200s and certain B757 aircraft. The Base also performs modifications on various American Airlines aircraft, and aircraft of other carriers. American has nearly 800 employees at the Kansas City Base. About 720 of them are licensed aircraft and jet engine mechanics. The Base plays an important role in Kansas City's economy.

New "Big Man" Spot Extends Popular "We Know Why You Fly" Campaign

FORT WORTH, Texas –American Airlines today introduced its second of two new TV, out-of-home and online video commercials of the We Know Why You Fly brand campaign. The new ad, called "Big Man," touts American's global route network with a story about a dedicated sports agent and his client.

Created and produced by TM Advertising, American's long-standing agency of record, the piece was filmed on location in Buenos Aires and Shanghai – two of American's international destinations – as well as in Dallas. The story includes a cameo appearance by Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, and traces a sports agent's journey around the globe in his attempt to persuade professional basketball teams to sign his talented, yet socially-awkward client, Milos. The agent relies on American's extensive international network and Business Class offerings, just like the millions of business travelers who fly American Airlines, a founding member of the oneworld® Alliance, each year.

Paperless Initiative Begins New Era in Air Cargo

FORT WORTH, Texas - American Airlines Cargo Division (AA Cargo) today announced its participation in the U.S. launch of an air cargo industry e-freight initiative which supports a move toward paperless documentation. The initiative is facilitated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

IATA's e-freight effectively eliminates the need to send 12 paper documents with air cargo shipments, which streamlines processes, improves speed and reliability, and cuts costs. IATA represents some 230 airlines comprising 93 percent of international scheduled air traffic.

The first use of the new system begins today on American flights between New York John F. Kennedy and London Heathrow airports. Further expansion into other routes is planned, and will be launched at additional major U.S. airports.

IATA's e-freight program is one of five Simplifying the Business projects being led by IATA to improve service and cut costs. Previous projects have included 100 percent electronic ticketing and RFID for baggage m anagement. E-freight requires that business, technical and legal frameworks be in place to allow airlines, freight forwarders, customs administrations, and governments to seamlessly exchange electronic information and e-documents instead of paper. In addition, the effort supports the environment by reducing paper-based waste.

"The U.S. launch of the e-freight initiative brings us one step closer to a completely paperless environment," said Dave Brooks, President - AA Cargo. "The improvement in data quality and timeliness of information will increase the speed of our interactions, yielding more efficient commerce for all of us in the air cargo industry."

Over the past year IATA has assessed the readiness of 209 locations worldwide in addition to the original six e-freight sites. It found that 46 countries, representing 63 percent of global air-freight volumes, have the appropriate international treaties and high level customs framework in place to qualify for IATA e-freight. The United States becomes the ninth e-freight location worldwide to deliver paper-free cargo.

Other participants in the U.S. launch include British Airways, KLM, United Airlines, DHL, and Kuehne+Nagel. IATA e-freight is also operational in C anada, Germany, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden and the United Kingdom. T he industry has set the end of 2010 as a deadline for the implementation of e-freight where feasible.

American Unveils New Admirals Club Lounge

FORT WORTH, Texas – American Airlines, which has served the Raleigh/Durham market since 1985, is relocating its operations to Raleigh/Durham International Airport's new Terminal 2 on Sunday, Oct. 26. American, a founding member of the one world ® Alliance, previously operated from Terminal C, which will be demolished in the coming weeks to make way for the second phase of the Terminal 2 project.

American and American Eagle, which together operate more than 50 daily departures at RDU, will occupy eight of the north concourse's 19 gates. Twelve ticket counter positions, with an island designed to ease congestion, along with 12 self-service devices will offer a smooth check-in process. Seven security checkpoint lanes will help customers move through security quickly, and three baggage carousels will deliver luggage in a timely fashion. The concourse also features 26 specialty retail shops and restaurants and two moving walkways.

"American and American Eagle are delighted to move into the bright, new facilities in Terminal 2," said Tom Del Valle, American's Senior Vice President – Airport Services. "Our customers will enjoy the spaciousness of the new terminal, as well as our terrific new Admirals Club ® lounge."

As part of the move, American will open the doors to its new Admirals Club lounge located across from gates C1 and C3 on the Mezzanine Level. With more than 5,000 square feet, the facility seats 121 members and guests. Open Sunday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., the new lounge offers light complimentary snacks, juice, tea, coffee and soft drinks. Admirals Club lounges also offer delicious fare ranging from seasonal salads, hot and savory soups, fresh sandwiches and wraps, small bites for a quick snack, and dessert items for purchase through its food and beverage program, Amora™ . Delays, Cancellations, and Diversion Events
American Airlines and American Eagle will provide customers at the airport and onboard an affected aircraft with timely and frequent updates regarding known delays, cancellations, and diversions and will strive to provide the best available information concerning the duration of delays and, to the extent available, the flight's anticipated departure time. It is American Airlines and American Eagle's policy to contact you in advance, whenever reasonable, at the phone number(s) provided in the reservation record. If you booked your reservations with a travel agency, Reservations representatives attempt to contact the agency when no customer phone contact exists. When cancellations and major delays are experienced, you will be rerouted on our next flight with available seats. If the delay or cancellation was caused by events within our control and we do not get you to your final destination on the expected arrival day, we will provide reasonable overnight accommodations, subject to availability. If a flight is adversely affected by events beyond our control, you are responsible for your own overnight accommodations, meals and incidental expenses. American Airlines or American Eagle personnel may be able to help you obtain accommodations in these circumstances. It is sometimes necessary for flights to divert, or land at a location other than the flight's intended destination. Medical emergencies and severe weather conditions are examples of situations when a flight could land in another city. If we believe there is a reasonable possibility that a flight will be diverted, that information will be provided to you before departure, when available. For example, the Orange County Airport in Santa Ana, California, has a curfew for inbound flights of 11 p.m. due to noise restrictions. If we are aware that headwinds will be particularly strong enroute and will impact the flight's arrival time, perhaps making the flight arrive too late to land at Orange County, an announcement will be made that it is possible that the flight will land at Los Angeles International Airport instead. In the event a diversion decision occurs after the aircraft has departed, the in-flight crew will inform you. In extreme circumstances, it is possible that a flight will cancel while on the ground in the city to which it was diverted. When this happens, you will be rerouted on the next American Airlines or American Eagle flight with available seats, or in some circumstances on another airline or some other alternative means of transportation. If we are unable to reroute you, reasonable overnight accommodations will be provided by American Airlines or American Eagle, subject to availability.

Baggage Delivery
American Airlines and American Eagle have devoted extensive resources and efforts to ensure our customers and their bags travel on the same flight. In the event your checked bags do not arrive on your flight, reasonable efforts will be made to ensure that the bag is returned to you within 24 hours for flights within the U.S. Since we cannot guarantee the delivery of baggage carried by another airline, our goal to return bags within 24 hours applies only when we are the carrier taking you to your final destination. Returning your bags may take longer on international flights due to flight duration, frequency of flights, or Customs & Immigration procedures at the destination airport. American Airlines and American Eagle attempt to contact customers whose unclaimed checked baggage contains contact information. If you are unable to locate a bag upon arrival, you should notify a baggage service agent prior to leaving the airport. At that time, the bag delivery procedure will be explained, and you will be provided with a brochure explaining the baggage recovery process. You will also be given a local or toll-free phone number that can be used for follow-up. For all U.S. locations, the number is 800-535-5225. This call center is available 24 hours a day to assist you. For international locations, hours of operation may be limited, but a local phone number is provided so you can obtain baggage information. Once a delayed or misrouted bag is located, a delivery company will return the bag to your local address at our expense. Listed below are some circumstances that may inhibit our ability to return your bags within 24 hours. No local name/address/phone numbers are provided You are located at a remote location or an "unreachable" address, such as a cruise ship or a camping site You changed your delivery address, but did not notify us We have limited flight schedules to your destination Operational circumstances prevent American Airlines or American Eagle from being able to locate or deliver your bags within this time frame Helpful Suggestions: Although statistics suggest it is highly likely your luggage will arrive with you, there is a possibility it might inadvertently be misrouted. For this reason, it is important to place your name, address, and telephone number(s) on the outside and inside of your bag. This will also make your bag easier to identify when claiming it at your destination. You should also carry certain items onboard with you. These could include, but are not limited to, travel documents, medication, jewelry, cash, keys, business documents, electronics, or other items of particularly high personal value.

Baggage Liability
Domestic travel is defined as travel in which the itinerary remains within the U.S., including Puerto Rico and/or the U.S. Virgin Islands. American Airlines and American Eagle will reimburse up to $3000 per ticketed domestic customer for lost or damaged checked baggage, subject to claim verification. The specific procedures for making lost or damaged baggage claims will be provided to you at the time a claim is filed. We will not pay for normal wear and tear on checked baggage or for loss or damage to belongings you carry on board in the passenger cabin. Certain items (e.g., cash, jewelry, cameras) are excluded from liability for lost or damaged checked baggage. A complete list of the limitations and exclusions is in our conditions of carriage and is available upon request. International travel is defined as travel in which the itinerary contains one or more segments of travel outside of the U.S., including Puerto Rico and/or the U.S. Virgin Islands. For travel governed by the Warsaw Convention, we will reimburse up to $9.07 per pound, up to a maximum weight of 70 pounds per checked bag (a maximum of $634.90 per checked bag). For travel governed by the Montreal Convention, we will reimburse up to 1,000 SDR's per ticketed customer. These limits may be lower for additional pieces to certain international destinations or when using connecting carriers. Helpful Suggestions Federal regulations require that checked baggage remain unlocked. Improperly packed items (e.g., boxes) or those considered fragile (e.g., paintings) may not be covered under American Airlines or American Eagle's baggage liability provisions. If the value of the contents of a checked bag exceeds our standard coverage ($3,000 per passenger for domestic travel, and $634.90 per checked bag for international travel), you may purchase additional baggage insurance. This insurance, known as excess value coverage, may be purchased at the ticket counter when checking in. Excess value insurance does not cover damage. Not all high value items are covered by this insurance, so you should verify with the agent that your specific belongings are included.

Ticket Refunds
American Airlines and American Eagle will strive to process eligible refunds in the time frames set out below, upon receipt of all required information. Some tickets are not refundable. For all eligible paper and electronic tickets purchased within the U.S. with a credit card or cash, refunds will be provided within 7 business days of receipt of the required refund information. (The credit card refund may take up to two billing cycles before appearing on a credit card statement, so you should contact your credit card company directly to verify receipt of the credit.) Tickets purchased with a check will be refunded within 20 business days of receipt of the required information. Refunds for electronic tickets can be obtained by contacting our Reservations department or through the Refund section on our web site at AA.com. In addition, refunds on tickets (paper and electronic) less than $3,000 can be obtained at any of our U.S. airport ticket offices or city ticket offices. Tickets purchased through a wholesaler that include non air portions cannot be processed as they are handled by the tour provider. Refunds for credit card purchases will be made only to the credit card account. Service charges are collected for some refunds (e.g., lost tickets). Accommodation of Customers with Special Needs
Unaccompanied Minor Service American Airlines and American Eagle's unaccompanied minor service allows children in certain circumstances to travel alone on our flights. We have established the following guidelines for our unaccompanied minor service. Children 5 years and older may travel on American Airlines or American Eagle on non-stop or same-plane flights Children must be 8-14 years old to travel itineraries requiring a connection on American Airlines or American Eagle Children 15-17 years old are considered young adults and are not required to use the unaccompanied minor service. However, the unaccompanied minor service is available to them upon request and under the same provisions American Airlines, American Eagle, and AmericanConnection do not accept unaccompanied children (UMNR) when their itinerary includes a connection to/from another airline, including codeshare and oneworld partners A fee is assessed for providing unaccompanied minor service When taking your child's reservation, we will request telephone numbers for parents or guardians. At check-in, you will also be asked to provide names, addresses, and home and business phone numbers for you and the party meeting your child. This information is used in identifying the party meeting your child upon arrival, and it will assist us in contacting you if necessary. We recommend checking in early at the airport to ensure that you have adequate time to complete the required paperwork and preboard your child. The welfare of unaccompanied minors is a matter we take very seriously. In advance or upon check-in, if there is a possibility that your child's flight might be delayed or misconnect for any reason, we may change your child's flight schedule, including the departure date. An airport representative will assist your child at the connecting city, escort your child to his or her next flight, and deliver your child to the person meeting him or her at the destination airport. We do not accept reservations for an unaccompanied child if it would mean his or her connecting flight would be the last flight of the day. Additional details on our unaccompanied minor service are available from Reservations. Helpful Suggestions: You should stay with your child until he or she boards the aircraft and remain at the airport until the flight leaves the gate. Provide your child with an extra copy of his or her contact phone numbers Before going to the airport, explain what will happen during the child's trip. This may include teaching him or her about airplanes, sounds, connecting flights, etc. - in general, just what to expect Provide your child with books, food, or other items which can help entertain him or her during the trip Let us know if it is your child's first flight so that, if time permits, we can give him or her a little extra attention Customers with Disabilities American Airlines and American Eagle endeavor to provide passengers with disabilities dignified, professional, and courteous service at all times. We have a team of employees who regularly consult with disability advisory groups on how we can improve airline accessibility and the quality of our service. Reservations Special Assistance Coordinators American Airlines and American Eagle Reservations Offices maintain a staff of Special Assistance Coordinators (SACs) who work with customers who have identified themselves as having disabilities. The Reservations representative who responds to the customer's initial call passes pertinent information to a SAC, who calls the customer back. A toll-free number exists for customers with disabilities to follow-up on travel arrangements with the SAC office. Airport and in-flight personnel are notified of special service requests. Pre-Reserved Seats American Airlines and American Eagle block a limited number of seats on each aircraft to accommodate customers who identify themselves as having a qualified disability. Adjacent seats are provided, under certain circumstances, for customers with disabilities who must travel with a companion for assistance. Assistive Devices American Airlines and American Eagle accept motorized and non-motorized assistive devices for transport. When necessary, we will disassemble and reassemble wheelchairs or assistive devices for customers when they travel. American Airlines and American Eagle provide storage for one passenger's collapsible, manual wheelchair in the cabin of each aircraft. This service is available on a first-come, first-served basis and has priority over carryon baggage belonging to other customers who board at the same city, provided the customer follows the preboarding procedure. In-cabin stowage space for assistive devices cannot be pre-reserved, but American Airlines and American Eagle accept carryon wheelchairs, provided they collapse to fit in an overhead bin or under a seat. Non-collapsible wheelchairs/scooters are accepted as checked baggage. These items can be checked at the main ticket counter or the departure gate. American Airlines and American Eagle offer a special wheelchair service that allows you to check your wheelchair at the departure gate and claim it at your arrival gate free of charge. Although you can arrange to claim your chair at the connecting city, we recommend that the chair be checked through to the final destination. The additional time required to claim and recheck your chair at the connecting city may compromise your ability to make your connection. American Airlines and American Eagle have wheelchairs and our representatives provide wheelchair service at connecting airports. Please let us know you will need this assistance when making your reservation. Assistive devices approved for cabin transport do not count towards the combined number of checked and carryon baggage a passenger is allowed free of charge, nor do they count towards the limit on carryon items you may bring on board. Boarding Assistance If you have special needs, upon request, preboarding assistance will be provided to you, allowing you the opportunity to be seated prior to general boarding. A special aisle chair is available to assist you if you are unable to walk, and all of our jet aircraft are equipped with specially designed seats that feature moveable aisle armrests to help make seating easier. Therapeutic Oxygen American Airlines provides onboard therapeutic oxygen, subject to availability. This service is not available on American Eagle flights. The Reservations Special Assistance Coordinators arrange for this service upon 48 hours advance notice. A doctor's prescription is required advising of the liters per minute flow rate. A fee is charged for this service. Complaint Resolution Officials for Customers with Special Needs We have employees at airports who are trained as Local Complaint Resolution Officials (LCROs) and are available during operating hours. A Corporate Complaint Resolution Official is available to assist LCROs 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Essential Customer Needs During Extraordinary Delays
Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our customers, and we are focused on having all our flights arrive and deplane on schedule. On very rare occasions, there may be extraordinary events that result in very lengthy onboard delays. These are situations in which an aircraft is delayed on the ground (other than on an active runway or taxiway) but does not have access to a terminal gate for more than two hours. We have developed detailed contingency plans at every domestic airport to address these situations. In such events, we will make every reasonable effort to ensure your essential needs, such as food (snack bar, such as a Nutri-Grain), water, restroom facilities, and basic medical assistance, are met. Every American Airlines and American Eagle U.S. airport team has an operational contingency plan in place to address these needs, which includes coordination with the local airport authorities and other airlines serving the airport when appropriate. Each plan designates a local control person to coordinate activities of the local team and communicate with our central operations team at headquarters.

Flights with Oversales
American Airlines and American Eagle, like most airlines, overbook flights. We do this because historical information shows that relatively few people cancel their reservations when they change their travel plans. Overbooking is done in the best interest of both customers and the airline. Without the revenue produced by filling seats that would otherwise go empty, every airline would have to compensate by raising fares. And just as important, selling our seats in this manner allows us to say "yes" rather than "no" a lot more often when customers call for a seat on the flight of their choice. Just because a flight is overbooked, it does not necessarily mean that customers with reservations will not be accommodated on their flight. The overwhelming majority of overbooked flights depart with all customers who have reservations and are present for departure. If at departure time more customers with confirmed reservations are present than there are seats available, gate agents will first ask for volunteers who are willing to give up their seats in exchange for compensation and a confirmed seat on a later flight. On extremely rare occasions, a customer may be denied boarding on an involuntary basis, if a sufficient number of volunteers is not obtained. In such events, we will usually deny boarding based upon check-in time, but we may also consider factors such as severe hardships, fare paid, and status within the AAdvantage program. With few exceptions, persons denied boarding involuntarily are entitled to compensation under federal law. Additional information concerning our overbooking policies can be found on ticket jackets and in our conditions of carriage. Upon request, reservations representatives or airport agents will advise you if your flight is overbooked at the time your reservation is made or during airport check-in. Bear in mind that, as stated above, most overbooked flights do in fact have sufficient seats to accommodate all customers who are present for departure.

Check-in Requirements And Baggage Acceptance Cutoff Times

When travel is completely within the U.S. including Puerto Rico, and on flights to Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands, recommended check-in time is at least 90 minutes prior to departure when checking baggage, and at least 60 minutes prior to departure if not checking baggage.

For flights departing Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands, recommended check-in time is at least two hours prior to scheduled departure.

For international flights, we recommend you arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to departure to allow sufficient time to complete all necessary international requirements.

CHECK-IN REQUIREMENTS AND BAGGAGE ACCEPTANCE CUTOFF TIMES
Customers must comply with minimum check-in requirements to retain their seats on the flight on which they are confirmed. Pre-reserved seats are subject to cancellation unless you have checked in (obtained a boarding pass) at least 30 minutes before scheduled departure. American does not guarantee to provide any particular seat on the aircraft.

For passengers checking bags, there are also baggage acceptance cutoff times. "Baggage acceptance cutoff time" means that customers must present themselves and their baggage to an airline representative for check-in no later than the stated cutoff times for the departure airport.

DOMESTIC TRAVEL
In addition to checking in 30 minutes before departure, you must be present at the departure gate and ready to board at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled departure time to retain your reservation and a seat.

Frequent Flyer Program - AAdvantage

The AAdvantage Program, the first frequent traveler program in the industry, began in 1981. Anyone wishing to enroll in AAdvantage can do so instantly at any American Airlines or American Eagle ticket counter, on-line at the AA.com website, or by calling 800-433-7300.

The program allows members to earn AAdvantage miles with dozens of participating companies, including world class airlines, leading hotel chains, car rental agencies, investment companies, and long distance providers. Also, the Citibank AAdvantage credit card allows members to earn miles for all types of transactions, even those not related to the travel industry.

Your AAdvantage miles do not expire if you have at least one qualifying transaction within the previous 18 months. AAdvantage benefits are numerous and varied. You can claim an AAnytime award, valid for travel whenever you like - no blackout dates, no restrictions - as long as the flight is not sold out. If you have a more flexible plan, you can claim MileSAAver awards. These awards are subject to capacity controls (a seat inventory control process used by airlines) and blackout dates, but they can be claimed with fewer miles than AAnytime awards. All awards can be issued in any name you designate, subject to the rules prohibiting the sale or barter of awards. In addition, you can donate your miles to the Miles for Kids in Need Program, which provides transportation for seriously ill children.

United Airlines' Inaugural Flight Between Washington Dulles and Dubai Begins Sunday

CHICAGO, Oct. 23, 2008 - United Airlines launches the first-ever nonstop service on Sunday, October 26 between Washington, D.C., and Dubai. With the inaugural flight, United becomes the only carrier to offer daily nonstop service between these important centers of government and commerce.

"Dubai is one of the fastest growing tourist and commercial centers in the Middle East," said Kevin Knight, United's senior vice president-Planning. "This route answers customer demand for more convenient, nonstop service to the Middle East and strengthens our international network by connecting these important cities like never before."

The new Washington – Dubai route expands United's breadth of service to the Middle East and strengthens the company's Washington Dulles hub as an international gateway. United also serves Kuwait City daily from Washington Dulles in addition to 21 other international destinations. Washington Dulles also offers valuable connections to more than 58 destinations in the United States.

United Flight 976 will depart Washington Dulles at 10:02 p.m. Sunday and land at Dubai International Airport at 6:44 a.m. Monday, local time. On October 27, United Flight 977 will depart Dubai 11:30 p.m. and arrive in Washington at 6:44 a.m. the following day.

Customers flying to Dubai on United will enjoy specially designed cuisine and excellent service. United First® customers will have an option of three Western selections as well as a Halal entr้e of chicken curry with basmati rice, vegetable jalfrezi and pickled vegetables. United First guests may also dine on what they want when they want with United's flexible and customizable dining option.United Business®customers will have an option of two Western selections as well as a Halal prepared entr้e of Lamb korma, saag kabul and dhal complemented by sides of spinach with garbanzo beans and curried yellow lentils. Some international airport authorities will not accept an ECO boarding pass for access through the security checkpoint. In those cases, ECO will still check in customers and direct them to reprint their boarding passes at the airport. In those cases, there is still a benefit to using ECO, including the ability to upgrade, purchase Economy Plus and pay service fees online, allowing more time at the airport to clear security.

AVRO RJ85 – AVRO RJ100 – BAe 146
	Most of our destinations in Europe are served by AVRO RJ85, AVRO RJ100 or BAe 146 aircraft. Brussels Airlines has about 14 Avro RJ85 aircraft at its disposal. This type of aircraft has 82 seats. Brussels Airlines also has 12 AVRO RJ100 and 6 Bae 146 aircraft, with 97 and 84 seats respectively.

Airbus A319
	Some destinations in Europe and the Middle East are served by our Airbus A319 aircraft. Brussels Airlines has 4 A319 Airbuses, each with about 132 seats.

Airbus A330-300
	Our African destinations are served by 4 330-300 Airbuses. A 330-300 Airbus has 284 seats, 30 of which are in Business Class. This type of aircraft can also carry cargo of about 30,000 metric tons per year.

Boeing 737-300 & 737-400
	Many European destinations are served by 11 Boeing 737-300 and 737-400. A 737-300 can carry up to 142 passengers and 5 crew members, while a 737-400 can carry up to 164 passengers and 6 crew members

By means of this registration, Thomas Cook AG, the renowned leisure airline, assures that Condor meets the more than 900 internationally recognized standards for safety in air travel. Condor's audit took place last year in Kelsterbach.

The IOSA program was first launched by the IATA in 2003 for evaluating the process management and monitoring systems of an airline in regard to operational safety and quality assurance. IOSA standards were developed in conjunction with interdisciplinary international groups under the direction of the IATA and are recognized worldwide.

Through this recognition, Condor now belongs to the 225 airlines who currently verifiably meet IATA's operational safety standards. By participating in the IOSA program, Condor demonstrates its commitment to continuous improvement in safety. Follow-up IOSA audits are conducted every two years to ensure that an airline continues to uphold the required standards.

Sterling Airlines offers passengers one of the largest choice of destinations available in and out of Northern Europe as well as between the Scandinavian countries and operates a large fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft. In 2007, Sterling flew 4.2 million passengers.

Sterling is owned by Northern Travel Holding and the company's head office is in Copenhagen, Denmark with bases in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Gothenburg, Billund, Bergen, Malmoe and Aalborg.

Sterling operates a large fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft, with 15 B737-700, 7 B737-800 and 4 B737-500. With an average of 8,5 years, Sterling's fleet is younger than most fleets in the industry. By the end of 2009 all of Sterling's New Generation aircraft will be equipped with winglets, half by the end of 2008.

Sterling is a member of the ELFAA (European Low Fares Airline Association), which helps ensure that European policy and legislation promote free competition and the continued growth and development of low-fare airlines in the future – thus allowing a greater number of people to travel by air.

Sterling History in Brief

Pastor Ejlif Krogager is the legendary founder of the travel company Tjæreborg Rejser – and in 1962, he also founded Sterling Airways.

The inspiration for the Sterling name came from Pastor Krogager's mother, who always used to give sterling silver gifts, because for her it was the very symbol of quality. This is the same attitude that today characterises the special Sterling spirit which has been built up over the decades: the epitome of dynamism and enterprise – with the accent on safety, quality and service.

In September 2005, Sterling merged with Maersk Air to become Sterling Airlines A/S. Sterling has developed from a traditional airline into Scandinavia's first low-cost airline, with both scheduled and charter flights to more than 40 destinations in Europe and operates over 120 routes.

In December 2006, the investment company Northern Travel Holding purchased Sterling Airlines A/S and took over its daily operations.

In February 2008, Reza Taleghani was appointed President and CEO of Sterling A/S. He is succeeding Almar Örn Hilmarsson

Being the focus of attention, Sterling introduces its new strategy as low-fare airline.
Sterling is awarded "Årets Rejsepris" (Travel Award of the Year) in Denmark for its numerous new initiatives in a period of reduction among most airlines.
Throughout the year, Sterling opens 21 new routes, primarily between Scandinavia and Southern Europe, but also routes between two Scandinavian capitals. Oslo-Copenhagen and Stockholm-Copenhagen.

2001

Despite the pessimism of the trade due to 11th September 2001, Sterling opens a number of new routes between Scandinavia and Southern Europe.

2000

Following several years of decrease in the travelling business, the company changes its strategy and introduces air services to Malaga and Alicante.

1999

Sterling becomes a 100% Norwegian owned company.

1996

The stock-quoted companies Ganger Rolf ASA and Bonheur ASA, related to Fred. Olsen, buy 90% of Sterling.

1995

Following renewed progress, the management takes over the company via a management buyout.

1994

Sterling European Airlines is founded by the estate after Sterling Airways. The company has three aeroplanes, 182 employees, and a modest share capital of DKK 5 m.

Hi Fly is a Portuguese airline, wet lessor specialist and operating worldwide. The airline completed the certification process in April 2006, obtaining its Air Operating Certificate, issued by INAC, the civil aviation authorities of Portugal, and in full respect to all the EU, JAR-OPS and EASA regulations, the most demanding worldwide.

Hi Fly operates presently three large commercial aircraft. The first aircraft included in the Air Operating Certificate was an Airbus A330-300, a widebody long range twin jet last generation fly-by-wire aircraft. This aircraft is now in its third year of operation. Two Airbus A310's were added to the Hi Fly fleet in the first quarter 2008.

The company obtained certification for operating worldwide, without any restrictions. Special certifications like Low Visibility Operation and 180 minutes ETOPS were also obtained.

Over the last ten years world aviation industry has witnessed the longest period of prosperity on record, with growth rates exceeding the expected 5% and reaching double digits in the Middle East and Indian sub-continent regions. As a result the manufacturers as well as the main leasing companies have been enjoying record profits and the airlines, the world over, have returned to sustained profitability.

By all accounts, this growth rate is set to continue unabated for the next twenty years at least, in correlation with the growing economies of emerging markets.

Hi Fly core business is to supply interim lift and support to other airlines and Governments, on medium to long term wet lease or charter contracts. The main reasons why an airline would contract an additional aircraft on wet lease from a wet lessor specialist are:
a) Unexpected loss of an aircraft for whatever reason (unexpected maintenance, incident or accident, etc)
b) Starting new routes or increasing frequencies on established routes
c) Interim lift while an airline is waiting for the delivery of new aircraft (waiting list can be on certain models over 4 years)
d) Sudden increase in demand (eg military transport due to an open conflict or the sudden success of a destination, with strong increase in demand)
e) Support to investor in start-up airlines, launching the initial routes

By operating modern, state of the art aircraft, Hi Fly deals only with major airlines, established carriers, Governments or investors with strong financial background and credibility, thus reducing its credit risk and exposure.

As the airline industry grows to match demand of an increasing number of passengers, the number of events requiring interim lift and therefore Hi Fly market will grow as well. Therefore we foresee a bright future for Hi Fly and plenty room for growth.

All the present capacity of Hi Fly is sold out on contracts until 2010.

transavia.com was founded in late 1965 by a Belgian and a Scottish private person under the name of Transavia Limburg N.V. with Maastricht Aachen Airport as its home base.

On 14 November 1966 it was awarded a charter licence to fly from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The first commercial flight took place on 16 November of that same year under the new name of Transavia Holland. In 1991, the year of Transavia's 25th anniversary, it became a subsidiary of KLM.

Since December 2004 its public name has been transavia.com, changed from Transavia Airlines. The reason for this being that the transavia.com website had become so important to the company, it was thought this should also be reflected in its name. The company has Amsterdam Airport Schiphol as its home base and transports approximately 4.5 million passengers a year to holiday destinations in Europe and Africa. The fleet consists solely of Boeing 737 aircraft of the Next Generation.

The Aer Arann Story

When Aer Arann operated its first commercial flight in 1970, it's ambition was to provide a reliable, value for money air service to 1,000 islanders, located in Inishmore, off the west coast of Ireland. And to do it with classic island charm.

Since those days not only has Ireland, and its islands, changed remarkably but the model of the global airline industry has been rethought and reconfigured, bringing with it a host of challenges – not least of which is the commodisation of what Aer Arann still believe is a highly personalized service.

Over the years Aer Arann has implemented a programme of well-managed changes - incremental expansion supported by market investigation and business savvy, investment in best in class technology and unfailing customer driven strategies. There is also another unquantifiable asset – that is the spirit of independence that fuels Aer Arann.

This vigor seized the opportunities in the early 80s to branch out from an island service to offering flight services within Ireland, beginning with the Galway to Dublin route. Soon after self-determination saw the company build their own airport and terminal facilities in Connemara, Co Galway. In 1994 ownership of the company changed hands and under the stewardship of Padraig O'Ceidigh and a hard-working team, the untapped potential of offering a complete air link service between major cities throughout the island of Ireland, was to be realised.

That year passenger traffic doubled, but just as importantly, the airline won its first award for service. In obtaining the ISO 9000 Quality Award, Aer Arann became the first European airline to achieve this accolade. As a further testament to the company's modus operandi, in 1998 the Government awarded the contract to operate the PSO Donegal to Dublin route. This was shortly followed by a Sligo to- Dublin service which had been managed by Aer Lingus. The moment had arrived to take the company to the next level and the UK became the obvious target for expansion.

Today Aer Arann operates over 600 flights per week, across 40 routes in Ireland to the UK and Europe. Passenger numbers have grown from 12,000 in its first year to 1.1m in 2006. Aer Arann have engineering bases in Cork ,Galway and the most recently opened Waterford base creating up to 45 jobs.

In order to simplify operations and maintenance procedures, and with a view to the next phase of the airline's development, the company made a key decision to partner with one aircraft supplier, ATR.

ATR is a joint venture within the Airbus family, with its final assembly lines in Toulouse alongside Airbus. They enjoy an impeccable track record operating in over 70 countries and flying some 560 million passengers per year in Latin America and Asia Pacific, in tough African climates and throughout the varied terrain of continental Europe

Aer Arann last year signed an agreement valued at €180m for the delivery of 10 new ATR 72-500s, the next generation in turboprop technology. .Aer Arann's decision to purchase turboprop aircraft, as opposed to jet aircraft, was carefully calculated. The procurement rationale was chiefly based on the fact that turboprops are the most economic way to transport passengers on short-haul sectors.

Before the end of June this year, Aer Arann will also have launched 6 additional routes between Ireland, UK and France, moved to a new Headquarters in Dublin and opened a new hangar in Galway Airport, the birthplace of the airline.. Aer Arann are committed to continuing what they regard as essential flight experience advantages, such as later check-in times, no extra baggage charges and free newspapers.

The company's excellence in customer service was recognised in 2006 by receiving the Palme D'Or European regional airline award for sustained excellence, reinforcingthe airline's belief that providing a progressive airline service doesn't have to compromise the human touch.

Only our flexible Y class fare Aer Arann bookings are refundable (subject to an admin fee of EUR €30/£24.00). Any requests for refunds of taxes will be refunded less an admin fee of €30/£24.00 per sector per person. Please note that all credit/debit card handling fees are non-refundable.

If passengers cannot travel due to personnel circumstances (illness etc.) the following options are available through our Reservations Centre prior to original date of departure:

Change the name on a booking for a fee.
Change the date on a booking subject to availability for a fee.
Passenger may choose to cancel their flight and claim through their insurance company.

In exceptional circumstances such as bereavement of an immediate family member we do offer a refund or travel credit on production of a death certificate. If a flight is cancelled and the passenger refuses alternative travel arrangements, the portion of the flight cancelled is fully refundable.
If there is a schedule change of greater than 2 hours of the original flight time, the booking can be either refunded or is eligible for a travel credit.
You will receive your refund by the original form of payment or by travel credit.
Aer Arann strongly recommends that you obtain suitable insurance to cover all eventualities.

Over the first nine months of 2008, Air Berlin transported 2.9 percent more passengers than in the corresponding period of the previous year. From January to September 2008, 22,107,115 passengers flew Air Berlin (2007: 21,482,622). Fleet capacity utilization for the first nine months of the year rose from 77.7 to 79.3 percent, i.e. an increase of 1.6 percentage points.

In September 2008, Air Berlin increased its revenue per available seat kilometre ("Yield per ASK") to 5.96 Eurocents (09/2007: 5.31 Eurocents), i.e. an increase of 12.1 percent. Revenue per available seat kilometre improved, even though a targeted capacity reduction decreased the number of passengers by 3.1 percentage points to 2,854,278 passengers (09/2007: 2,946,929) and the fleet capacity utilization by 1.7 percentage points to 82.5 percent (09/2007: 84.2 percent).
